How to fix IPTV buffering and freezing

Nearly all buffering comes from the connection between your router and your screen. Work through these fixes in order; most people are sorted by step 4.

Nine fixes, quickest first

  1. Test your speed on the device itself. Run a speed test on the TV or stick, not your phone. You want 10 Mbps for HD and 25 Mbps for 4K.
  2. Restart everything. Unplug the router and the device for 30 seconds, then plug the router in first.
  3. Get closer to the router or use a cable. Ethernet is the single biggest improvement. On Firestick, an Ethernet adapter costs very little.
  4. Switch to 5 GHz Wi-Fi. It is faster and less crowded than 2.4 GHz, as long as you are not too far from the router.
  5. Clear the app cache in your device settings.
  6. Close other streams and downloads. Game downloads and cloud backups can use most of your bandwidth.
  7. Change the player settings. In the app, try switching the video player or decoder between hardware and software.
  8. Lower the quality on a weak connection: an HD stream is far steadier than 4K on slow broadband.
  9. Message us. If it still buffers, send us the channel and the time on WhatsApp and we will check the stream.

Is it my broadband or the service?

If other streaming apps such as YouTube or Netflix also struggle on the same device, the problem is the connection. If only one channel buffers while everything else plays smoothly, tell us which one and we will look into it.

Should I use a VPN?

A VPN adds an extra step to your connection and usually makes buffering worse, not better. Try without one first.

Peak-time tips

Home broadband is busiest in the evening and during big sporting events. For live sport, use a wired connection and avoid other heavy use in the house while you watch.

Questions

Why does my IPTV keep buffering?

Usually because of a slow or unstable connection between the router and the device. A cable or 5 GHz Wi-Fi fixes most cases.

What internet speed stops IPTV buffering?

About 10 Mbps per screen for HD and 25 Mbps per screen for 4K, measured on the device.

Does restarting the Firestick help?

Yes. It clears memory and often fixes stutters: hold Select and Play for five seconds.
