Is IPTV legal in the UK?

Short answer: IPTV as a technology is legal. Watching or selling TV without permission from the people who own the rights is not. Here is what that means in practice.

The short answer

IPTV is legal. Unlicensed content is not.

Internet TV is how BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Sky Go and NOW work. The question is never the technology; it is whether the provider has the rights to show what it streams in your country.

What UK law says

  • Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988: showing or distributing copyrighted programmes without permission is infringement.
  • Digital Economy Act 2017: raised the maximum sentence for online copyright infringement on a commercial scale to 10 years in prison.
  • Viewers: UK courts and the Intellectual Property Office have made clear that streaming pirated live TV can be unlawful for the viewer too, and authorities have written to users of illegal services.

You still need a TV Licence

In the UK you need a TV Licence to watch or record live TV on any channel, on any device, however it reaches you, and to use BBC iPlayer. That applies to IPTV exactly as it does to an aerial or satellite.

The risks of illegal IPTV

  • Legal risk: for sellers above all, but viewers are not immune.
  • Security risk: unofficial apps and modified sticks can carry malware or harvest your details.
  • Payment risk: illegal services shut down without warning, and your money goes with them.
  • Quality: streams that disappear mid-match are the norm, not the exception.

How to spot a legitimate IPTV service

  1. It says plainly that content depends on the rights it holds in your country.
  2. It has written terms, a privacy policy and a refund policy.
  3. It takes payment through a recognised payment provider.
  4. It does not promise "every channel in the world" for a few pounds.
  5. It has a real support channel you can reach.

Where GoStream 4K stands

GoStream 4K only shows programmes we have the rights to show in the country you watch from. If something is not licensed for your country, we tell you before you buy. See channels and content for how the line-up works.
